Traveling Internationally? Prepare for Possible Phone or Laptop Searches

International travelers should be aware that U.S. Customs and Border Protection may inspect electronic devices when a person enters the United States. This can include phones, laptops, tablets, external drives, and other devices carried during travel. Most travelers will not experience a device search, but the risk is important for anyone carrying sensitive personal, business, legal, medical, immigration, or confidential information.

This issue is especially important for visa holders, green card holders, business travelers, researchers, and anyone with a pending immigration matter or prior immigration concern. A device search can cause delays, and for noncitizens, information found during inspection may raise questions about admissibility, visa compliance, work activity, or prior immigration history.

Before travel, consider carrying only the devices and files you need, backing up important information, removing unnecessary sensitive data, and reviewing password and biometric-unlock settings. Travelers with prior immigration issues, criminal history, pending applications, or sensitive work materials should seek advice before departure rather than trying to solve the issue at the airport or border.
